Getting gray-haired is inevitable – it happens to all of us at some point. Thanks to changing attitudes and social norms, the same feeling of panic no longer arises at the sight of the first gray hairs. In 2021, the trend we have seen in recent years will continue: more and more people will leave the natural gray hair color or even dye their hair gray! Letting your hair turn gray is a very personal and inspiring journey, and we are here to help you – read more about how to do it if you want to invest in gray hair!
The Physical Process
We start from the beginning and explain why we become gray-haired. The hair follicles contain a substance called melanin (hair pigment), and when the body stops producing melanin, the hair loses its color and turns gray or white. When this happens varies enormously – it mainly depends on the genes. You may be 16 years old when you see the first white strand of hair, or it is only in your 40s or 50s that it occurs. In general, most women in their 30s discover the first gray hair, and in their 50s, most women probably have over 50 percent gray hair. As the color pigment decreases, you will notice that the hair also changes the structure and becomes coarser.
Gray Hair: A Long Journey
If you are ready to stop dyeing your hair and want to become naturally gray-haired, you should also be aware that it takes a lot of commitment – and time. You do not wake up one day with beautiful silver-gray hair; it is a long and arduous process that can take months. You need a lot of patience and perseverance, and how you decide to deal with this is up to you. Read on below for three different approaches to getting gray hair.
Let it grow
This is the simplest and cheapest solution, but not necessarily the most flattering. And it takes time. This means that you let the roots grow out, and nature has its way, quite simply. Eventually, the roots will grow out entirely, and you will get beautiful gray hair.
Short and sweet
If you can not wait for your long hair to grow out, you can always cut it. Let the roots grow a few centimeters, and then apply a short hairstyle, like a fairy, to make the transition look smoother and shorter.
If you are going to dye your hair gray or are already dyeing your hair to cover the roots, stop using the base color and start with loops instead. This helps to “trick” the eye and makes the gray hair blend in naturally, and makes the transition less noticeable. For you with blonde hair, the transition can be a little more subtle, and highlighter (loop kit) such as Blonde Got2b Metallic or L’Oreal Paris Highlights are perfect for achieving a natural result.
How to Take Care of Gray Hair
- Gray hair requires extra care because it tends to be dry and brittle. The result is that gray hair can look worn and dull. Around your 40th birthday, you can therefore choose to switch to special anti-aging shampoo and hair treatments. These hair care products cover gray hair with a thin layer of polymers, ceramides, and proteins for protection and extra shine. An effective leave-in spray makes your gray hair even more beautiful. Spray the treatment into the hair after shampooing, comb through it and then style the hair as usual. Enjoy the effect of this treatment: your gray hair will look and feel healthier.
- A balanced diet with proper nutrition also has a positive effect on hair and hair growth. This is especially true of biotin (also known as vitamin H), zinc, iron, vitamins A, B2, and B6 *
